Alumina is anhydrous aluminum oxide with crystal structure, which is obtained by processing bauxite by the Bayer process. Commercially available form of the product is a white powder that can have two modifications:
α-Al2O3(corundum) is more stable modification, which is characterized by high hardness (9 degrees Mohs scale). Its melting temperature is 2040°C, a boiling point is 3300°C. It is formed from transitional gamma alumina by calcinations process on 1000 ° C.
γ-Al2O3 Al2O3 is a white powder insoluble in water and soluble in strong acids. It is obtained by calcinations of aluminum hydroxide. Alumina has amphoteric properties.
Alumina has wide application:
The main application of alumina is in the production of aluminum, and about 90% of world production of alumina is used for it. Metallic aluminum is obtained electrochemically by electrolysis of melts.
Alumina is used in the production of abrasives due to the high hardness and strength of its crystals. It is widely used as a less expensive substitute for industrial diamonds, in the production of various types of sandpaper, in the production of polishing substances, etc.
Due to its fire resistance, chemical inertness and white color alumina is often favored as filler for plastics.
Alumina is also used as a catalyst in industrial processes. It is particularly widely used in the desulphurization process, where hydrogen sulfide from waste gasses is converted to elemental sulfur, as well as the process of dehydration of alcohols to alkenes.
Alumina is packed and transported in truck and railway cisterns – containers for powdered and granular, or in big bags weight 1000 kg.
Alumina is registered under REACH Regulation.

Within its product profile, the Company Alumina Ltd can offer low-calcined alumina with increased whiteness AKA as "White alumina" applicable in different non-metallurgical programs. This type of alumina is slightly finer than standard type SANDY (d-50 = 50 µm).
